Unified high school teams met at Capital Clubhouse last month to compete for spots in the Wednesday, Feb. 15, competition. Advancing to the state contest held in Hagerstown are teams from Westlake, Maurice J. McDonough and La Plata high schools.

Unified sports teams are composed of a combination of students with and without abilities who train together and compete against other unified teams. Bocce is a sport played on a bocce court, or an area of play featuring a hard surface. The goal of the sport is to roll a bocce ball closest to a target ball, which is called a pallina. Teams earn points for how close their bocce balls roll or end near the pallina.

Teams are sorted into five divisions using a formula developed by Special Olympics Maryland. La Plata had three teams in the district competition, McDonough had six, North Point High School had two teams, St. Charles and Thomas Stone high schools each had one team and Westlake had two.

The first-place team in each division advances to the state competition held Feb. 15.
